Darragh MacAnthony Appoints Darren Ferguson As Posh Manager For The Second Time

Peterborough United Football Club have appointed Darren Ferguson as the club's new manager, penning a four and a half-year contract at London Road.

Ferguson was unveiled at a press conference on Wednesday morning with chairman Darragh MacAnthony introducing his new manager to the media.

Ferguson said: 'I have a great relationship with the chairman Darragh MacAnthony and I am glad to be back. We need to get some stability back to the football club. I can't wait to get started.

'We are both young and ambitious, towards the end of my last tenure I got a bit carried away. I have learned a lot. We were naive when we went back into the Championship last time and we are determined not to make the same mistakes again.'

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony said: 'Darren came to my house and we had a long chat. We have always had a lot of respect for each other. We are both ambitious, we have learned from the mistakes we have made and we are excited to get our project back on track. It is unfinished business. I want to work with Darren for a long time and that is why I have given him this contract.

'I love owning this football club, a lot of events have happened that have been difficult, but I have put my heart and soul into it. I want to be able to give this football club over to my son in the future. I want Peterborough United to be a club that everyone respects and that is what we are working towards.'

Ferguson added: 'This league is very inconsistent, I feel we have a better squad than when I left. They might lack a little bit of self-belief, a bit nervous against Brentford, but we will get to work with them. '

Darragh MacAnthony Confident In His Decision to Put Ferguson Back In Charge of Posh

Darren Ferguson has targeted winning a third promotion with Peterborough United after completing his shock return to London Road.

The 38-year-old took Peterborough United from League Two to the Championship in successive years during his first spell in charge but left in acrimonious circumstances in November 2009 with the club bottom of the second tier.
A poor year in charge of Preston followed for Ferguson - where he was sacked after Christmas - while chairman Darragh MacAnthony has seen Mark Cooper, Jim Gannon and Gary Johnson try and fail to emulate his success with the League One side.

Johnson was the latest to depart on Monday but after a 2-1 win over Brentford on Tuesday night lifted Peterborough United up to fifth, Ferguson is confident of an immediate return to the Championship.

He said: "You'd have to say automatic promotion is still possible this season. Anyone who can go on a run has got a right chance.

"I know the saying is 'never go back' but I don't believe in that.

"I've missed the place. I've had a hard 12 months at Preston but it's good to be back.

"We want to get into the Championship and stabilise in the Championship. That has always been the aim."

Ferguson said: "It was an easy decision for me to return.

"Contrary to what some people may say, me and the chairman Darragh MacAnthony have always had a great relationship and this is a really good football club.

"There have been a lot of changes but we can get this club back on track.

"There was no falling-out. Toward the end of my time here I maybe got a bit complacent. It was easy to get carried away with the success we had.

"We both agree we have learned a lot. We were naive going into the Championship last time but we will learn from that.

"I've cleared the air with Barry and I don't want to go over old ground.

"It has to be positive from now on. We've had a 15-month break but let's get back on with it."

But Darragh MacAnthony too hopes to crown a fresh start with another promotion.

Darragh MacAnthony said: "I came out with some silly things last time which I regret but we have always had a lot of respect for each other.

"I gave him his first shot as a manager and he gave me back-to-back promotions.

"We started a project together and we can now finish it together.

"It's been a rocky 15 months since Darren departed. Our hardcore fans will be delighted that Darren is back," concluded Darragh MacAnthony.

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony Brings Back Darren Ferguson To Peterborough United

Darren Ferguson’s sensational return to London Road will be confirmed.

Ferguson, who left London Road in acrimonious circumstances in November 2009, agreed a two-and-a-half year contract with chairman Darragh MacAnthony.

He will be formally unveiled as Peterborough United boss at a London Road press conference.

Darren Ferguson and Darragh MacAnthony watched League One clash with Brentford together just 24 hours after Gary Johnson was relieved of his managerial duties.

Ferguson’s appointment will herald a remarkable turnaround in the relationship between manager, chairman Darragh MacAnthony and the club’s director of football Barry Fry.

Darragh MacAnthony gave Ferguson his first managerial job in January, 2007. He was rewarded with back-to-back promotions, but Ferguson was sacked when the club were bottom of The Championship in November 2009.

Ferguson was sacked by Championship side Preston over Christmas paving the way for his return to Peterborough United. He takes over a side fifth in League One following last night’s 2-1 win over Brentford at London Road. He left the match without comment.

Youth team boss David Oldfield took charge. He said: “It was a strange scenario to take charge when the previous manager and staff had done such a good job.

“But the lads worked hard, stayed together and grafted out a good win. The win was down to the players.”

Peterborough United fans appear to be pleased that Darren Ferguson is back.

On a poll on The Evening Telegraph website www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk asking who fans would like as their new manager. Ferguson finished way ahead of the likes of Alan Curbishley, Roy Keane and Chris Hughton.

Darragh MacAnthony is a leader in the sport of football and enjoys watching the World Cup Final 2010

Darragh MacAnthony is an iconic chairman in football and an asset for Peterborough United. He has enjoyed watching The World Cup Final 2010.

Andres Iniesta scored a goal deep into extra time to give Spain the World Cup for the first time with a 1-0 win over Netherlands on Sunday.

With the score level at 0-0 four minutes from the end and about to go to a penalty shootout and Netherlands down to 10 men, Iniesta scored from close range after a Cesc Fabregas pass to end the all-European final.

Spain had the best of the play in a bruising game in which nine players were shown yellow cards by English referee Howard Webb in the first 90 minutes, a World Cup final record.

Dutch defender John Heitinga was sent off for a second yellow in the second half of extra time.

Neither team has won the World Cup before though the Dutch were playing in their third final.

Darragh MacAnthony has left overseas property to solve the problems of Peterborough United

Highly-rated forward George Boyd has pledged his future to Peterborough by agreeing a new three-year contract. The 24-year-old, who ended last season on loan at Nottingham Forest, appeared to be on his way out of London Road this summer but has now decided to stay.

Boyd will officially sign the paperwork ahead of Wednesday`s friendly with West Ham and he told the club`s official website: "The chairman [Darragh MacAnthony] made me a great offer and I firmly believe this club is going places and I want to be a part of that. "If I didn't believe we would get promotion back to the Championship this season then it would have been far tougher to sign but I have seen the players train out in Portugal and we have an excellent squad. "Not only that but manager Gary Johnson has demonstrated to me what he is all about and I am excited to work under him. I think we have a better squad now than when we achieved the back to back promotions and the team spirit is coming back to that level now as well so it is all positive for the future. "The fans have also played a massive part. Even when I was with Nottingham Forest last season the supporters at Peterborough were first class and I cannot wait for the new campaign to start so I can be fully focussed on my football again."

The Chairman Darragh MacAnthony demonstrates how he handles problems

Darragh MacAnthonys ability and leadership skills shine through.
George Boyd has commited himself to Peterborough United by signing a new three-year deal. The 24 year old midfielder reached agreement with Darragh MacAnthony and Club officials in Portugal at the weekend.

Boyd said: The Chairman (Darragh MacAnthony) did make me a great offer and Im grateful to him for that. Commenting on the Peterborough United supporters he said: The fans have always been good to me and its great to play in front of a crowd like that. Ive been here over three years and Ive had nothing but great backing from them. That definitely played a part in my decision. I enjoy playing for Peterborough and the fans.

Posh fans were braced for an offer from a Championship club for the former Stevenage man, but Chairman Darragh MacAnthony was able to persuade him to stay in Cambridgeshire.

Peterborough United fans show gratitude to Darragh MacAnthony with two standing ovations

The biggest cheer on an afternoon of pure Posh pleasure was reserved for chairman Darragh MacAnthony. Darragh MacAnthony's millions have enabled Peterborough United to assemble a high-class side which equaled the club record of 28 wins in a single season as they secured a well-deserved promotion from League Two.

Darragh MacAnthony received a standing ovation before the game and at half-time. He was also on the pitch at the end to hand out the League Two runners-up medals to the players before presenting the runners-up shield to captain Micah Hyde.

Darragh MacAnthony said: "This is the pinnacle of the season. It's what we have been aiming for since the summer and what we expected to get.

"But it's not been easy. The manager and the players deserve a lot of credit for the way they won promotion.

"We've enjoyed every minute of the season. When I arrived at the club I think we had crowds of 3,700 and now we should be able to claim an average of over 6,000 for the season,” added Darragh MacAnthony.

"It shows the support is out there. We've kept the old fans and gained some new ones who I'm sure will keep coming back because of the entertainment we offer.

Darragh MacAnthony finalized with,"The potential is there on and off the pitch. It's why we can aim for the League One title and a trip to Wembley in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy next season."

Darragh MacAnthony is treating manager Darren Ferguson, assistant manager Kevin Russell and goalkeeping coach Andy Dibble to a break in the Bahamas as a reward for their efforts.

Darragh MacAnthony confident that two years of momentum will result in a massive upcoming season for Posh

Darragh MacAnthony is convinced that Peterborough United will shock the football world next season. The charismatic chairman, Darragh MacAnthony is adamant that Peterborough United can challenge at the top end of the Championship and bring Premier League football to London Road.

Darragh MacAnthony believes the momentum from back-to-back promotions will prove to be a huge advantage for his young, vibrant side.

Darragh MacAnthony said: "We have something not a lot of teams have and that is two years of momentum and success achieved by players who have yet to reach their peak.

"I feel we will shock the football world and compete at the top end of the Championship this season. Our club has nothing to fear and hopefully we will play the same style of attacking football and let other teams worry about us and not worry about them,” insists Darragh MacAnthony.

"It's going to be a massive season for all of us and an enjoyable one. Of course the league is full of the so-called big boys, but history tells us teams like Wigan, Reading, Hull and, of course, Burnley can buck the trend and get to the promised land.

"Fasten your seatbelts Posh fans as you ain't seen nothing yet from this team!” exclaims Darragh MacAnthony.

Darragh MacAnthony said: "We have at present 33 players at the club and probably one of the biggest squads in the Championship which needs to be addressed as most teams want to have about 19-22 players next season.

"I appreciate that I get a bit of flak for how we treat players that are transfer-listed, but let's not forget that they get paid to do a job pretty well and if they are deemed not good enough by the gaffer then it's time for them to move on as they have had their chance and didn't take it.

"The players all get paid bloody well so let's remember that sometimes in life tough decisions need to be made and the bigger picture needs to be looked at. If I was a transfer-listed player I would want to go and play football week in week out as soon as I could to prove a point and to get on with my career."

Darragh MacAnthony ready to smash Peterborough United’s transfer record

Peterborough United was prepared to smash the League Two transfer record on a player recommended by owner Darragh Macanthony.

Peterborough United have had a 1 million bid for MK Dons striker Izale McLeod rejected after Darragh Macanthony suggested he would aid the club's promotion bid.

Darragh Macanthony, speaking exclusively to The Evening Telegraph, said: "We made the bid a couple of weeks ago as well as a few other bids.

"Izale was my shout and I asked Keith and Barry if they rated him and then told them to make it happen. Barry nearly fell off his chair as he had been working hard on a few other targets over the last week.

"We hope January will be a busy period for us transfer wise with a few players coming in to help our promotion challenge. That's the end goal this season, promotion!" exclaimed Darragh MacAnthony.

The record transfer fee paid by a club in the basement division of the Football League is 850,000 by Brentford to Crystal Palace for Icelandic international Herman Hreidarsson in September 1998.

Darragh MacAnthony believes he made the best deal of the century for Peterborough United

Darragh MacAnthony reckons the 600,000 splashed out on goalkeeper Joe Lewis will turn out to be the deal of the century. The Posh chairman, Darragh MacAnthony sanctioned a club record 400,000 transfer for Lewis in January, 2007. Two promotions since then have upped the money paid to Lewis' former club Norwich City.

Lewis was outstanding in Saturday's 4-0 FA Cup defeat at a near full-strength Spurs.

Darragh MacAnthony said: "Joe was brilliant and that kind of performance week in week out plus clean sheets will lead to a long England career which we all knew would be the case when we signed him. It's probably the best 600 grand the club has spent.

"I am still in shock over the starting 11 Spurs picked compared to a lot of other Premier League teams but now all our focus is back on the Championship.

"No-one bar Aaron Mclean has asked for a transfer out of the club as the players are all in this together and want to fight their way out of it. Leaving the club where we are right now isn't what you would expect from your best players but the manager will be adding to his squad in the coming days.

"The dressing room needs a lift and a bit of shaking up, so January will be interesting to say the least with Barry Fry busy trying to offload the 10 or 12 that the gaffer feels he wants to let go.”

Darragh MacAnthony states "January is probably the most important period of games since I took over and a great result against Sheffield Wednesday next week can allow us to kick on and put the last five months firmly behind us."

Darragh MacAnthony reckons Peterborough United has one of the best managers

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony reckons his club have one of the best managers outside of the Premiership. And Darragh MacAnthony has promised to back his opinion of Keith Alexander with hard cash.

Money will be made available for transfers as Darragh MacAnthony pursues his dream of Premiership football within a decade.

Darragh MacAnthony said: "I have total respect for Keith and I love his management style. In my opinion we have one of the best managers from the Championship down and I want him to be the man to lead us to success.

"I love the way Keith is calm and collected whether he's talking about a great win or a bad defeat. I will not interfere with his job, but he will have my absolute support and I'm looking forward to working with him.

"There will be money available for new players, but other clubs needn't start bumping their prices up just because they think Posh have money.

"I'm a shrewd man and I won't be paying over the odds for anyone. I want promotion this season, but I'm also dreaming of the Premiership and I believe we can do it."

Alexander welcomed Darragh MacAnthony with open arms and confessed that the prospect of having money to spend was an unusual situation for him.

Alexander said: "I'm 100 per cent pleased with what's happened and clearly the club is going in the right direction. It's a bold statement to say we want Premiership football, but with Darragh MacAnthony's backing anything is possible.

"We all want success and that means progressing up the leagues so it's an exciting time for everyone at the football club.

"There are a lot of unknowns for me as I have only met Darragh MacAnthony twice and I've never been in the position of having money to spend.

"But the extra finances can only be a good thing. I'm not sure what my budget will now be, but I also have faith in the squad we have at present."

Peterborough United can only loan players until the transfer window re-opens in January.

Darragh MacAnthony will not be selling off any Peterborough United players

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony has confirmed the global financial crisis will not force Peterborough United to off-load any of their star players this season. The multi-millionaire businessman, Darragh MacAnthony, made his declaration after hearing that Championship clubs have been linked with goalkeeper Joe Lewis and striker Craig Mackail-Smith in the last seven days.

Darragh MacAnthony who has bankrolled the club's rise through the lower division ranks, insists 2009 will bring an upturn in financial fortunes for everyone.

Darragh MacAnthony, who has been travelling the world on business since watching Peterborough United beat Leeds a fortnight ago, said: "There is no doubt that the financial world is in chaos and it has impacted on everyone including many football clubs, and many of my competitors who have gone bust.

"But if the media give the dramatic headlines a rest and 2009 starts like I think it will globally, recovery will be in sight.

"We fortunately do not need to sell any of our players and I am confident with the squad our manager has put together that 2009 will see the Posh as a Championship club and one more promotion from the promised land.

"As far as the offers apparently floating around the press, well the clubs involved can keep dreaming if they think I would sell these players for the small change mentioned.”

Darragh MacAnthony added, "Like I keep saying to everyone, these players will be worth millions more this time next year in the Championship and they are all on three and four year contracts."

Lewis is reportedly a 2 million target for QPR, while Cardiff and Birmingham City are apparently keeping tabs on Posh top scorer Mackail-Smith.

It's also common knowledge that Boyd is coveted by numerous higher divisions clubs after a string of dazzling displays this season.

Darragh MacAnthony hopes to make history for Peterborough United

Darragh MacAnthony believes everything is now in place for Peterborough United to create a slice of club history. The chairman, Darragh MacAnthony is still buzzing after securing the services of highly-rated manager Darren Ferguson until the year 2013.

Ferguson, who has attracted interest from Reading, QPR and West Brom this summer, signed a two-year extension to his current contract during the club's training trip to Marbella.

Darragh MacAnthony is hoping his manager's decision will kill off speculation about his future and enable him to concentrate on leading Peterborough United into the Premier League for the first time in the club's history.

Ferguson received a moderate pay rise as well as additional time in recognition of his achievement in securing back-to-back promotions for Peterborough United. His back-room team of Kevin Russell, Keith Oakes and Scott Taylor have also been awarded four-year deals.

Darragh MacAnthony said: "The contract has been improved to suit Darren and the club. The terms have been improved, but not by a silly amount as we have a budget to meet, and it also suits the club to tie him down for longer as there is no doubt he seems to be every club's number one pick when a job becomes available.

"To be fair to the gaffer, he loves it here and just wants to continue working with the players to see how far he can take them.

"Nine out of 10 managers would have run for the door for the West Brom and QPR jobs, but he didn't give them a second thought.

"And now we can all put the speculation to bed and get on with the job in hand which is going for our third promotion in a row and creating a bit of history for Posh.

"I took all the management staff out to celebrate on Thursday night and they were all in great form and just champing at the bit for the season to kick off.”

Darragh MacAnthony ended with "They are delighted with how our players are looking in training. They are also happy with how quickly the new players have settled in."

Darragh MacAnthony wants it to be known that Peterborough United is not a selling club

Peterborough United chairman Darragh Macanthony has issued a 'hands-off' warning to the Premiership predators currently hunting the club's young stars. Darragh Macanthony has pledged that Craig Mackail-Smith, George Boyd and Aaron Mclean will all be starring at London Road again next season.

Darragh MacAnthony is aware that Mackail-Smith in particular has been attracting attention from some of the biggest clubs in the country, but there will be no summer sales.

Mackail-Smith has caught the eye during a run of four goals in his last six matches. He was again linked with Premiership hopefuls Sunderland.

But Darragh Macanthony said: "There are scouts sitting in our stands at every match looking at our players which is no surprise considering some of the talent in our squad.

"I keep telling these scouts to go home as we are not a selling club. Indeed we intend to add to the squad rather than take away from it.

"Craig Mackail-Smith and Aaron Mclean will terrify defences when they start playing together and players like those two are the future of our club. They will help us rise through the leagues.

"On current form 1 million would not buy Mackail-Smith's boots so I would like to state in capital letters that there is no chance of him leaving.

"There is still plenty to play for this season and I wouldn't miss the games at the weekend for the world. We need six points big time this weekend."

Darragh Macanthony also revealed that plans for the new Posh stadium are currently being drawn up.

It's estimated it would take 20 months to construct once a suitable plot of land has been identified.

Darragh MacAnthony is also planning two open weekends next season after a similar event last month attracted 6,000 fans.

Darragh MacAnthony has no problems having charity logos on the Peterborough United’s kits

Peterborough United announced that the fixture with Cardiff City has been designated as a day to raise awareness of three charities for the 2009-2010 campaign, the Free Kicks Foundation, Sue Ryder Care and ASBAH.

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony has recognised the superb work that the charities undertake throughout the year and as such has kindly allowed for the sponsorship of the kit to be replaced for one game only by their three nominated charities.

Darragh MacAnthony and Peterborough United have worked closely with kit manufacturer adidas who have kindly donated a full kit, with help from Chroma Sports, for the fixture with Cardiff City.

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony said:

“I believe this is the first time in our history that we have used a one-off kit for a league fixture and I was delighted to allow our three charities to have their logo's on the strip.”

'”We are delighted to be working so closely with Sue Ryder Care, it is a charity that is close to my heart and they are an organisation that do so much for people both in the city and across the country.”

“The Free Kicks Foundation are a charity that help disadvantaged children across the city. Steve Thorpe and his team work exceptionally hard and have a close link with the football club. ASBAH are the leading UK registered charity providing information and advice about spina bifida and hydrocephalus and have been involved with the football club for a number of years. I would like to take this opportunity to thank adidas and Chroma Sports for all their continued support and assistance. '

Darragh MacAnthony and Peterborough United are auctioning off the kits to raise money for Sue Ryder Care, The Free Kicks Foundation and ASBAH and they are hoping that your bids will raise a superb amount for the charities. The top 11 bids will be invited to the Peterborough United v Derby County fixture where a draw will take place for the 11 kits that were worn for the game against Cardiff.

Darragh MacAnthony Answers Questions from Peterborough United fans

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony spent time live on peterboroughtoday.co.uk answering questions from Peterborough United fans.

The Diary is happy to devote its page to the man who has made two successive promotions a real possibility:

John Hunter: If Peterborough United fail to go up, will you be able to hang on to your best players, and your manager, for another crack at promotion from League One?

Darragh MacAnthony: We are going up!

Mate of Nilesh: When Peterborough United beat Leicester, do you think they can go on and lift the League One title or is it just out of reach?

Darragh MacAnthony: I wanted the title since day one and believe we will win it, unlike many of the doubters.

Ann Edwards: Will Peterborough United be able to compete financially in the Championship?

Darragh MacAnthony: We have a solid plan for the Championship and this will involve aiming for the top 10 in the first season and chasing promotion in the second season.

Kevin Hunter: What did you do on your birthday?

Darragh MacAnthony: Chilled with the family and my new baby girl who arrived a few days earlier. We will bring in the best young players from Leagues One and Two and also the odd Pemier League youngster.

Conor: Are you worried that Premier League clubs will actually go for our 'holy trinity'?

Darragh MacAnthony: Not at all. If they want them, they will have to break records for them. It's a compliment for our club to have 15 Premier League scouts at every home game.

Ash Garford: If we were to find ourselves in the Championship next year, what kind of transfer budget would we be looking at strengthening our squad?

Darragh MacAnthony: The manager wants five or six players and we are already looking at them and making moves in preparation. No massive changes are expected, just tweaking the strength of the squad.

Andy Richards: Do you believe you have the determination (and the funds) for promotion to the Premier League?

Darragh MacAnthony: Without a doubt we have the team to challenge and with, a few additions, this team can do anything over the next three years.

AM Wade: 2010 will be the 50th anniversary of Peterborough United being elected to the Football League. Are the club planning anything special to celebrate this event? 2009 is also the 75th anniversary of the founding of Peterborough United.

Darragh MacAnthony: Plans are in place for celebrations.

Posh Shiela: How does it make you feel to know that you personally have created so much happiness for Peterborough United fans?

Darragh MacAnthony: It is a dream come true to see a plan come together, that I mapped out from day one.

Tom Johnson: Millwall away is in a few weeks time. This game is potentially huge, and could have a massive say on whether or not we gain promotion. Is anything being done by the club to ensure a large away contingent is present?

Darragh: We are trying our best to organise something for this game.

Tony Teesdale: Quite a few of the players signed under Darren Ferguson have proved to be either duds or unwanted – e.g. Rendell, Hatch and Howe – while several others are fringe players at best and unlikely to feature in a higher division. Who is responsible for bringing players into the club and are there any plans to change how we sign players in the future?

Darragh MacAnthony: 'Duds' is a stupid word to use and these players are brought in by me, the manager and the director of football. Many of them will bring more money in than they cost and our transfer policy is the envy of many other clubs.

Jim McGee: When we gain promotion to the Championship in just a few weeks time, what will the club's policy be toward bringing new talent to the club?

Darragh MacAnthony: Our policy won't change massively and will work as it has done already.

Matt Norris: If we don't win promotion this year or next year, will you remain committed to the club?

Darragh MacAnthony: Of course. I own the club, it's my baby and is part of the family. You don't run to the hills when things don't happen, patience is needed – but we will win the title.

Alistair Wade: Will we have to change the London Road stadium to an all-seater for the Championship?

Darragh MacAnthony: Not straight away.

Jack Thorpe: When we get promoted, will Fergie be given a decent transfer budget for the new season?

Darragh MacAnthony: He has already been given his budget and is very happy with it.

TMitC: Do you prefer Georgie Boyd with the headband or ponytail?

Darragh MacAnthony: Neither, they think they play for Brazil with those hair styles.

Sam B: What's your prediction for the Leicester match?

Darragh MacAnthony: 3-0.

Andy: Can we please look at further improving the club shop?

Darragh MacAnthony: Of course and it's a continuous exercise that won't happen overnight, like everything else around the club

Davide: Why is it that we do not have a club shop in the city centre?

Darragh MacAnthony: We were quoted 177k per annum in most places we looked for premises. It will happen, but again not this season or next

John: What are your long-term plans for your involvement with Peterborough United? Where do you see you and us in 10 or 20 years?

Darragh MacAnthony: Building Posh into a good Premier League club with average crowds of 22,000-plus and building a brand in football and having my children join me on the board.

R. Suppards: Are there any particular players out there within our budget that you personally would like to see pulling on a Peterborough United shirt?

Darragh MacAnthony: Gerrrard/Torres/Ronaldo.Nelson

PK: After we win today I'll get drunk, what will you do?

Darragh MacAnthony: I am working in London over the weekend so it'll be back to work after the final whistle.

Ash G: Have you ever considered standing in the London Road end for a home game? I'm sure you would be made very welcome.

Darragh MacAnthony: I will do it for one half in the final game of season at home.

John: I was skeptical at first about the appointment of Darren Ferguson as manager? How and when did you know that you would form such a good partnership?

Darragh MacAnthony : A good relationship takes time to forge and ours has had its ups and downs as we are both young, feisty and impatient, but I knew after our first meeting we would gel very well.

Tom Johnson: Will Peterborough United fans get a say in regards to the new Stadium design?

Darragh MacAnthony: We will definitely look for input from supporters for this.

TMitC: Have you got any ideas for the new stadium's name?

Darragh MacAnthony: Whoever pays the one million per year.

Lindsay: Have you considered adding people onto the board who will also financially support the club like you do?

Darragh MacAnthony: I don't do partners.

Nick: Can the club play 'Posh we Are' as the players run out against Leicester?

Darragh MacAnthony: No, but if the fans really want this kind of music, we can make it happen in future.

Malc: Do you have any pre-match superstitions?

Darragh MacAnthony: Yes, I used to go into the manager's office to catch up with the staff, but now they come up to my office as we lost the two times I went in there for coffee.

Posh Shiela: Do you get sick and tired of the whingers who are never satisfied, who moan at the game, in the ET and on the radio?

Darragh MacAnthony: Life is full of them and you can't keep everyone happy. Of course I laugh at it considering the progress we have made in two seasons.

Sam B: Any chance of you attempting the crossbar challenge at half-time today?

Darragh MacAnthony: Not in my suit and shoes. I would hate to slip and look like a fool in front of a sell out crowd.

Paul Venters: The chairman's player of the season so far is?

Darragh MacAnthony: Craig Mackail-Smith.

Nick Edwards: Do you feel that the supporters should be more involved in how the club is run off the pitch?

Darragh MacAnthony: Not really. If the supporters want to buy the club that's a different subject, but I own it and run it. But I don't mind working with supporters for opinions and ideas.

Ash G: What has been your favourite game so far this season?

Darragh MacAnthony: Leeds at home.

Nick: Who are you most looking forward to playing next season in the Championship?
Darragh MacAnthony: Newcastle.

Darragh MacAnthony’s Controversial Decision

Darragh Macanthony believes his new manager has a ruthless streak which will serve Peterborough United well.  Darragh MacAnthony, speaking exclusively to The Evening Telegraph from his Florida home, admits his appointment will have shocked many of the club's supporters, but he is confident that he has selected a manager who can deliver his dream of Premiership football in seven years.

Darragh Macanthony said: "I interviewed many candidates over the phone and Darren was by far and away the most impressive.

"You would not believe what some of the others wanted to talk to me about. One prospective manager was more interested in how much money he could make on transfers and signings and I am not into that at all.”

Darragh MacAnthony added, "I wanted a manager who shared my vision for the future and Darren certainly fits that bill. His application came out of the blue, but we had great conversations because he had bothered to do his homework.

"He had firm ideas on everything from game tactics, warm-downs, warm-ups and style of play to diets. He came across as a very impressive young man and he even asked me to supply him with videos of the last 10 matches so that he could start preparing for the future straight away.

"I told him the last 10 matches were a horror show, but he insisted on seeing them anyway. He has passion, drive and hunger and I like that in my employees,” stated Darragh MacAnthony.

"He also has a ruthless streak that football managers need. I honestly believe we have employed an outstanding young man.

"I realise that his appointment was a shock, but I would ask for patience from the fans and the media because I firmly believe we now have the right man for the job.

"Experience is not always relevant to success. Just look at what Aidy Boothroyd, Paul Ince and Chris Coleman have done in their first management jobs.

"It can't do any harm that his father is a managerial legend either. He certainly won't lack for sound advice."

Darragh Macanthony confessed he was gutted as he watched a seventh straight League Two defeat play out online. He still believes promotion is possible, but he accepts that the automatic places are now out of his reach.

Darragh Macanthony added: "We can go up, but we have to do it the hard way through the play-offs now. It's been a terrible run and I was gutted that we didn't seem to show any spark again.

"We just need to go on a run like Hartlepool have managed. Then we can sneak into the play-offs and then it's anyone's game."

Darragh MacAnthony convinced that Peterborough United will have no problems bringing home League One title

Darragh MacAnthony remains confident that the League One title is heading to London Road.  Darragh MacAnthony will watch his first match at Swindon since the 2-0 win over Leeds. He has been out of the country since then because of business commitments.

Darragh MacAnthony said: "I can't wait for this evening. It's been far too long, but I also hope to see most of December's matches.

"I couldn't be happier with the team's performances and credit to the gaffer, his coaches and the players who have created this fabulous unbeaten run so early in the season.

"I still believe the best is yet to come from this talented squad and although December could provide the biggest test for all of them, I have no doubts they will get the results their hard work deserves.

"We have three objectives: to win the League One title, to get the home crowds over 7,500 and to get the new stadium project up and running and we are on course to achieve all three," concluded Darragh MacAnthony.

Darragh MacAnthony urges Peterborough United fans to come in droves

Peterborough United Football Club chairman Darragh MacAnthony has urged the Peterborough public to turn out in force and support the 'best squad in the club's history'.  Darragh MacAnthony will be at League One promotion battle with Scunthorpe at London Road and he hopes to be joined by a passionate and sizeable home crowd.
Darragh MacAnthony, who has bankrolled two of the most successful seasons in Peterborough United’s history, said: "Darren Ferguson and his team have done magnificently well to get Posh into a great position.

"Six of the last 10 games are at London Road so it is now more important than ever that all Peterborough people come and support the club.

"I have backed the manager 100 per cent and he has responded by giving us the best squad in the club's history and what a great achievement back-to-back promotions and Championship football will be.”

Darragh MacAnthony added "We have a team full of young, hungry players who need the support and encouragement of everybody at every one of the 10 'cup finals' we are facing.

"I once again ask all fans to really get behind the lads and do their bit to get us where we belong – the Championship.”

Concluding, Darragh MacAnthony says "Nothing makes the hair stand on the back of your neck more than hearing the roar of Posh fans encouraging the team on to another vital three points.”

Darragh MacAnthony greeted by a standing ovation from Peterborough United supporters

The last Posh FA Cup meeting with Tranmere produced one of those moments when the hairs stood up on the back of your neck.  Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony paid for the club's fans to make the long haul to Merseyside for the second round tie in December, 2006.

And when Darragh MacAnthony stepped out on to the pitch before the game he was greeted by a standing ovation and raucous applause from the 2,000 Peterborough United fans behind one goal.

If Darragh MacAnthony was in any doubt about the affection Peterborough United fans felt for him it was washed away in that moment. Suitably inspired, Peterborough United went on to win the match against a team from a higher division 2-1.

Darragh MacAnthony said: "The Tranmere game was one of my favourite days as Posh owner. Playing them again will bring back many memories.

"I just hope that the atmosphere for this game will be the same. I also hope we get the same result as we could do with a big third round tie for a change."

Darragh MacAnthony’s criteria for the next Peterborough United manager

Darragh MacAnthony has revealed the qualities he is seeking in the next Peterborough United manager.

Darragh MacAnthony admits he is about to make the most important recruitment decision of his time at London Road.

Darragh MacAnthony is targeting an ambitious, driven, hands-on boss with experience and a proven track record in League One in recent seasons.

Darragh MacAnthony hopes to appoint a replacement for Jim Gannon before the end of the season. The new man will have a challenging brief which includes winning an immediate return to the Championship as well as the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final at Wembley.

Darragh MacAnthony said: “There is no doubt I will take my time over our next manager. It’s probably the single most important recruitment I will make in my time as chairman.

“I would like somebody in place by the end of the season so that the new man can watch our last couple of games closely and gauge an idea of what he will have to work with.

“Instead of spending my time apologising to Posh fans for this season’s setbacks and disasters, all I can do is prove actions speak louder than words.

“And this means . . .

“Finding a manager who is ambitious and driven and matches our targets for next season.

“Who plays attractive football which will entertain our crowds and give our players a lift.

“Who is a proper training ground coach who gets his hands dirty and has a track record for improving young players.

“Has experience and success at the level we will be at next season, with a proven track record in last three or four years.

Darragh MacAnthony concludes with: “Whoever the new manager is, the objective next season will be to win League One and put a trophy in our cabinet which is something that hasn’t happened for many years.”

Darragh MacAnthony addresses the Peterborough United fans

Darragh MacAnthony has urged the Peterborough United fans not to desert the club in their hour of need.

Darragh MacAnthony insists his ambitions and dreams for the club remain as powerful as ever. He wants supporters to show their backing by purchasing season tickets for an expected promotion drive in League One. So far 700 have been sold.

Darragh MacAnthony said: “I appreciate fans are feeling numb over what’s going on at the club and our poor form this season, and that may be stopping them from committing to a season ticket for next season.

“However, I am a great believer in fate and learning from mistakes and this season will make us much stronger as a club on and off the field.

“It’s a blip in our goal for the promised land. As a fan you have to take the highs and lows, just like I do as owner of the club, and we may have had the stuffing knocked out of us this season, but it has certainly not killed my ambitions and dreams for Posh.

“If anything it’s made me even more driven than before to bring proper success to the club. So my advice to our fans is - take a breath, then do the right thing and renew your season ticket and help start the momentum for our quest to win League One next season and to go to Wembley in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

“I will pull out all the stops financially to bring success next season and so I expect our fans to support us as they have done over the last three seasons good and bad.”

Darragh MacAnthony claims the rivalry between MK Dons is ‘juicy’

Darragh MacAnthony believes Peterborough United and MK Dons will soon be slugging it out in the Championship.   Darragh MacAnthony is convinced both clubs will be celebrating promotion from League Two at the end of the season no matter what the result of their top of the table clash at stadium:mk .

And Darragh MacAnthony reckons that success will inevitably lead to Premier League clubs sniffing around after the services of Ferguson and Ince.

Darragh MacAnthony said: "It should be a cracker against MK Dons, but I am not looking at this match as the be all and end all of the season.

"The facts are that we have eight games left and if we win them all we secure the title so right now our destiny is in our own hands and nobody else's.

"I definitely see us going toe to toe with MK Dons in League One and The Championship over the coming years and I know that many of our current players will be involved as the majority of them are under 25 and have their peak years ahead of them with us.

"As for the managers being involved, who knows as I have no doubt both ourselves and MK Dons will have Premiership clubs banging the doors down to speak to both gaffers but hey if that doesn't happen, then success hasn't happened either!"

Darragh MacAnthony described the rivalry between the clubs as 'juicy', but revealed that he has developed a great friendship with Dons controversial owner Pete Winkelman.

Darragh MacAnthony also took time out to praise the Peterborough United fans for supporting his big ambitions in ever-increasing numbers.

More than 3,500 Peterborough United fans are expected to travel to Milton Keynes for the big game, while attendances at London Road have been steadily rising.

Darragh MacAnthony added: "Pete is one of the chairmen I get on with the best since I took over the club and he is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet.

"His ambitions are the same as ours long term and I think that over the next five years this rivalry between our clubs will only get juicier!

"I am over the moon with our support and it keeps building and getting stronger. It's great for the city to have a football team doing so well and over the next 10 years our fan base will just get stronger and stronger."

One of the best days of Darragh MacAnthony’s life

Hero chairman Darragh MacAnthony has placed Saturday, 2nd May 2009 among the greatest days of his life.  Darragh MacAnthony was the guest of honour at the Peterborough United promotion party at London Road.

Darragh MacAnthony received a standing ovation from happy, and grateful, Posh fans as he delivered speeches, stood among the supporters, and presented medals to the players at the end of a final day draw with Swindon.

It was the second successive year that London Road had hosted an afternoon of celebration.

Peterborough United fans are now eagerly awaiting Championship football and Darragh MacAnthony, who has bankrolled consecutive promotions, is the man most are thanking.

Darragh MacAnthony said: "It's been another great day, one of the best of my life, right up there with my marriage and the birth of my three children.

"It's amazing what we have achieved here, although it's also not a surprise as we have some great people working at this club.

"And we won't be slowing down. Championship football will be great for the club and for the city, but it's now all systems go for the Premier League."

Manager Darren Ferguson said: "I certainly couldn't wish for a better group of players to go with into the Championship.

"They have been fantastic all season and the majority of them will go well in the Championship. We will have to bring some extra players in and work has already started on that.

"I had a lengthy meeting with the Darragh MacAnthony on Saturday morning and it was very productive. We know what we want and we know who we want and now it's a question of making it happen."

The celebrations continued with an open-top bus tour of part of the city for the players and management staff before a civic reception hosted by the mayor at the Town Hall.

Peterborough’s local businesses welcome Darragh MacAnthony with open arms

Ambitious Peterborough United chairman Darragh Macanthony has been sharing his plans for the future with members of the city's business community.  In a rare public appearance, and his first presentation geared specifically towards local businesses, the 30-year-old explained why he chose to invest in Peterborough United and his vision for the club.

Darragh Macanthony replaced Barry Fry as chairman at London Road in September 2006.
About 70 businessmen and women attended the Peterborough Chamber of Commerce event, which was held at the club’s London Road ground.

Organiser Helen Bosett said those in attendance were impressed by Darragh Macanthony’s passion, ambition and determination.

She said: “We were all interested to hear about his vision for the future, and it’s difficult not to be excited when he talks about where the club could be in the future.

“Our members were keen to make it clear we support what he is doing at Peterborough United. A thriving club, with a chairman willing to invest a large amount of money, is good for the city.

“One of the delegates was so impressed he decided to become a club sponsor.”

Darragh Macanthony said he hopes the club will soon be attracting crowds in excess of 30,000 to home games.

He said he was determined to find a suitable site for a new stadium and, once suitable land is secured, the development could be completed in less than two years.

Chamber chief executive John Bridge said he is delighted that Peterborough United is being rejuvenated.

He said: “The money and enthusiasm which are now being poured into Posh has given a new lease of life to both the club and supporters alike.

“There is no doubt that these are exciting times, as Darren Ferguson continues to make his mark on the club, which is keen to engage with and gain the support of local businesses.”

Darragh MacAnthony’s summary of an unforgettable 2007/2008 Posh season in his own words

The Evening Telegraph asked Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony to pen a piece for this Posh promotion special.

Here, in his own words, is what Darragh MacAnthony had to say about the unforgettable season:

"It's been an awesome season from start to finish with many highs and a few lows, but I suppose all that matters is the end result and that means League One here we come!

"I have always been optimistic about going up and winning the title even when we were 14 points from the top. I remember seeing the squad back in the summer in Marbella and feeling the team spirit building and the confidence that was pouring from all the young players.

"I think you could break our season down in two parts. From August until January the manager sought to find his perfect 11 and the perfect system.

"We lost many games horribly, while looking out of sorts on the pitch and did our usual going missing at Christmas trick, but one thing that didn't sway or change was the manager's or my belief that it would all come good by the end of the season.”

Darragh MacAnthony added, "I am a stats freak and one thing I always do is analyse the stats from all of our games and I have had many a conversation with the manager reminding him of how many shots we have had, possession etc, even when we lost.

"Stats for me are the window to the soul and if you look at ours, they will tell you that we create a lot of chances, play entertaining football and score a lot of goals late in games.

"These are the key ingredients for any successful football side and up until January the only stat really irritating the life out of me was the lack of clean sheets.

"The Macclesfield home game was the turning point for our team. It typified the lack of consistency in our results and our inability to put a good unbeaten run together.

"I was heading off to the States the next day and myself and the manager had a good 30 minute chat about the result and both agreed that it was time for a siege mentality to set in around the team and that the Macclesfield result would be the one to give us this - 19 games later and 11 clean sheets and you all know the rest!”

Darragh MacAnthony stated that  "The biggest thrill for me has been watching the gaffer grow into a top class manager who can change a game with his tactical ability and his inner strength to deal with setbacks, and always remain positive and focused even under severe pressure.

Darragh MacAnthony's highs:

-The 17-game unbeaten run

-A good FA Cup run

-Playing exciting football and having the best strike-force in League Two.

-Signing Joe Lewis In January

-Our support home and away

-Hitting a good few of the personal targets I set at start of the season

-The spirit in our squad top to bottom

-Finally buying the club

Darragh MacAnthony's lows:

-Failing to beat the MK Dons

-Our Christmas form

-Average cup run in Johnstone's Paint Trophy

-Not being at all of our games due to work
